2015 Sydney Rare Book Fair In association with ANZAAB
Barnet Long Room, Customs House, 31 Alfred Street, Circular Quay NSW 2000
Lovers of rare and collectable books in Sydney are in for a treat this year. The Sydney Rare Book Fair will be held between Thursday November 5 and Saturday November 7 in the beautiful Barnet Long Room on the first floor of the heritage-listed Customs House building at Circular Quay.
Leading dealers from all around Australia will display and offer for sale books, manuscripts, maps, prints, photographs and ephemera. There will be fine and rare works of literature, history, travel and exploration, modern first editions, gorgeously illustrated books, magnificent bindings, and striking examples of Australian and international graphic art – something for all interests and tastes.
There was a time when every Australian city boasted its share of antiquarian or secondhand bookshops. Most of these tended to have at least one locked glass cabinet that housed top-end rarities. In recent years, the number of shops of this type has dwindled due to a combination of high rents and the ubiquitous internet.
So, thank heaven for book fairs! For three days in November, if you are in Sydney you can indulge in the thrill of the chase, and perhaps discover a copy of that long sought-after volume that fits perfectly into your collection; you can meet like-minded collectors, and share the knowledge and the fellowship that abounds at book fairs; or maybe you’ll be serendipitously seduced into a whole new collecting interest.
Craft bookbinders will also be on hand to discuss the care and repair of bindings, and to display their work.
Thursday 5 November 12pm – 8pm
Friday 6 November 10am – 6pm
Saturday 7 November 10am – 4pm
Entry is FREE
